Asian American Recovery Services offers youth prevention and treatment
services to North San Mateo County residents from its site in Daly
City. We collaborate with the school districts to provide prevention
services to Daly City middle and high schools, offering curricula based
in life skills and youth development models. Outpatient substance abuse
counseling services are offered to youth referred through San Mateo
County Office of Juvenile Probation. We are also involved in the
training and implementation of Asset Development in the Daly City
community.
Project Lakas (from the Tagalog word strength), is a developmental
project which involves the training of the community on the 40
Developmental Assets model, pioneered by the Search Institute. The
Developmental Assets is a prescription for raising healthy children in
a community, and it involves positive interactions between the youth,
their families, their teachers, the administrators at their schools,
the support staff at their schools, the community peace
officers—potentially every member of the community.
Asian American Recovery Services staffs, trained by affiliates of the
Search Institute, are working with the Bayshore Elementary School
District to train District Staffs (teachers, administrators,
counselors, support staffs) on the Developmental Assets. In the second
year, the Developmental Assets Model will involve the Daly City
community to modify the Developmental Assets Model in order to more
effectively target local Filipino families and their communities.
Project Lakas is funded by the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s
Health, and involves collaboration with the Bayshore Elementary School
District, Garnet J. Robertson Intermediate School, and the Daly City
Peninsula Partnership Collaborative.
