Board of Directors
The
Board of Directors of Asian American Recovery Services, Inc., is
comprised of a diverse group of highly dedicated professionals. Their
unique and varied expertise, combined with their selfless commitment to
achieving our mission, enables the board in providing strategic
guidance, financial planning and overall governance of the agency.
Chosen
for their dedication to the Asian American Recovery Services, Inc.
mission, their planning and oversight skills, and their ability to
access governmental, corporate, and grass roots resources, directors
are elected for two-year terms. The full board and its committees meet
on a regular basis.

Jeff Mori, Executive Director

Kan Wong, Chair
brings over fourteen years of dedication to health and
well-being education to AARS, from his volunteer work at the
Chinatown Community Youth Center to his role as Program Coordinator
with the Asian Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Project, a
pioneering AARS, Inc., program. Mr. Wong has served on the
Board of Directors since 1999 and is currently a training
program manager within the NonStop Enterprise Division of
Hewlett-Packard.

Richard Jue, Vice Chair
is a noted leader in the San Francisco Asian community
as a founding member of the Asian Peace Officers Association.
Appointed by Mayor Willie Brown, Officer Jue serves on the
security team for the Mayor’s Office of San Francisco.
Mr. Jue is past-president of the Japanese Community Youth
Council and former member of the J-Town Task Force.

Cheryl H. Wallace, Secretary
dedicates her time and private law practice to helping
better serve the juvenile criminal justice system. A former
public defender, Ms. Wallace has served on the Board of Directors
for more than six years.

George Suncin, Treasurer
serves as Human Resource Manager for the San Francisco
Department of Children, Youth and their Families. As the former
Executive Director for Horizons Unlimited, Mr. Suncin shares
non-profit and human resource experience in addition to his
commitment to human service programs. Mr. Suncin served as
Chair of the Human Rights Commission under San Francisco Mayors
Feinstein and Agnos.

Ramon Calubaquib
is a committed community advocate and experienced program
director for health and human services affecting children,
youth and families. Mr. Calubaquib is a well-known consultant
and lecturer for Asian program planning in addition to his
employment as Program Director at the Japanese Community Youth
Council.

Celinda Cantú
is serving her eighth year on the Board of Directors bringing
extensive experience in health education and human services.
Ms. Cantu is the Health Program Coordinator of the San Francisco
Department of Public Health - AIDS Office. She also serves
as a board member for ELLAS En Acción.

Teresa Guingona
is a recognized leader in the Filipino community. As an
advisor for Filipinos for Affirmative Action and the Filipino
Task Force on AIDS, Ms. Guingona is currently serving her
second term with the Board of Directors. Ms. Guingona is a
doctorate student in Clinical Psychology and the mother of
a three-year old son.

Dr. Nelson Kobayashi, Pharm.D.
has dedicated his career and leadership to improving health
care in the Bay Area. Through his years at UCSF, Dr. Kobayashi
has been a Pharmacy Alumni Board member, Assistant Professor
and Assistant Director of Pharmaceutical Services. Dr. Kobayashi
has served with the Board of Directors for 11 years.

Dr. Herb Leung, Pharm.D.
is a founding member of Asian American Recovery Services
and has served on the Board of Directors since 1985. Dr. Leung
brings two decades of commitment and experience in mental
health and substance abuse, currently serving in his twenty-second
year as the Clinical Pharmacist at the Center for Special
Problems.

Bill Maher
brings more than twenty-five years of political leadership,
as a former member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors,
past-president of the Board of Education, past- president
of the Golden Gate Bridge Board and former CFO of the Delancey
Street Foundation. Mr. Maher is an attorney and a Senior Advisor
for the San Francisco International Airport.

Sululagi Palega
is a dedicated member of the Samoan community, serving
on the Samoan Development Board of Directors and the Hunters
Point Boys and Girls Club. Mr. Palega shares ten years of
civic experience and is currently the President of the San
Francisco Housing Authority Commission. Mr. Palega is employed
as a Manager of the Muni Transit Assistance Program.
